The Plastics are known for our rapid involvement in the rock n’ roll scene here in L.A., but Sandra Starr and I decided to take a break from our notorious groupie ways when we were sent out on assignment for Crypt Mgazine. It was a red carpet event held on Hollywood and Vine in honor of former head designer for Von Dutch, Christian Audigier who was celebrating his 47th birthday. The event started out a bit unorganized and seemed to get worse as the night went on with guest list chaos, cancelled celebrity appearances and much bitching from the fire department over potential hazards. To make matters worse, there was no alcohol available at the makeshift bars inside the main tent! After a dozen delays, the fashion show got under way and helped us forget about the previous drama. The show kicked off a performance from rap rockers, Crazy Town who announced that they were reforming. They rocked the house and got the crowd thumping along in time for the runway models to make their first appearance sporting the new line of Ed Hardy Vintage Tattoo shirts, caps, army fatigues, mini-skirts and swim wear. The show portrayed a “United Colors of Beneton” type theme done street style. The fashions of Christian Audigier blend the ideas and staples of various sub-cultures including punk, gangsta, biker and rock n’ roll. The show far surpassed this concept by including an array of unconventional models that took to the runway alongside the typical young, beautiful and waify. The alternative models included a thick and curvy tattooed Latina girl, a female midget, an American Indian sporting traditional garb and a Middle Eastern Indian draped in a pink turban. It was a smorgasbord of cultures both traditional and modern showing that there is more than one way to be fabulous! And fabulous we thought the line was… well, at least until we paid a visit to the Ed Hardy store on Melrose Ave. in Hollywood and found out that a simple t-shirt retails for $120. Oh, well… we all suffer for fashion in one way or another!
